Azkals: We’re still strong sans Phil and James Younghusband

By Mark Giongco

INQUIRER.net   MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Football Peace Cup, formerly known as the Long Teng Cup, kicks off Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

The Philippine Azkals, who finished second to Hong Kong in last year’s tournament, will battle it out against Guam, Macau and Chinese Taipei.

The Azkals though, won’t have the services of Phil and James Younghusband.

Despite the exclusion of the two football stars, Chieffy Caligdong, who took home the Golden Boot award last year, remained upbeat of the Azkals chances.

“We have new faces in the team. Siguro mas malakas kami ngayon (as compared to) last Long Teng Cup,” said Caligdong, who led the tournament with four goals, in a press conference. “Every team wants a good result.”

“We’ll probably rotate [players] a little bit. I’m willing to give the players their chances,” said head coach Hans Michael Weiss.

The Philippines opens its campaign against Guam before battling Macau Thursday and clashing with Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

  1. They should be good enough to win. If you combine the populations of Guam and Macau it is only about 750,000. A nation of over 80,000,000 should be able to find 11 players who are good enough to win. Taipei will be another issue. I think baseball is the main international team sport there, and that is why they have a low ranking.

  2. "We have new faces in the team. Siguro mas malakas kami ngayon (as compared to) last Long Teng Cup, said Caligdong"

Ulol! We're significantly weaker than last year! The goalkeeper and the back line alone is a big cause for concern!

  3. In my opinion Chinese Taipei will win the tournament.....without the Younghusbands...who will score? Ian? Probably not....he even fails to hit an empty goal. And even last time the 3-0 vs Guam was far beyond convincing and now without two of the strongest players? I have serious concerns in what direction the NT goes....first it seemed football has finally found its way and now all seems to be like a bad joke or puppet theatre where the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing....

Lagi lng natin tandaan na WALANG SINO MAN ANG HIHIGIT PA SA NATIONAL "TEAM" kahit sang lugar ka mapunta.

  10. hey i think what chieffy means by a better team is that this team is more bonded and has a better chemistry. id rather support a team who plays for each other rather than a team who plays by its superstars. still azkals is our national team! everyone should support it! love philippines
