Nofa-Ceres eye sweep of Group B

Tuesday, May 21, 2013
DEFENDING champion Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa) – Ceres is a shoo-in to top Group B as it faces win-less Masbate today for its last elimination match in this year’s PFF Suzuki U23 National Cup.
Nofa fortified its grip on Group B after an easy victory against Davao, 5-0.
Nofa also previously tied with Cebu in Group A that has two straight wins in competition held at Governor Mariano Perdices Memorial Football Field in Dumaguete City, Monday.
Nofa’s title retention bid was displayed after BJ Baguiro broke the ice with a goal in the 4th minute, followed by successive goals from Joshua Beloyain the 10th and Jimuel Ariola in the 11th minute.
Baguiro and Beloya scored two goals apiece.
Last Saturday, Nofa served early notice to other contenders that it was dead serious in defending its title with a 6-0 drubbing of Zamboanga-Dipolog.
Prince Anthony scored two goals in the 19th and 34th minute, BJ Baguioro followed in the 32nd, Ryan Lirio in the 75th, Joshua Beloya in the 80th, and Gerardo Valmayor Jr. sank the last nail to the coffin with a goal in the 89th minute.
Meanwhile, in the first game last Monday, Zamboanga-Dipolog avenged its loss to defending champion last Saturday to blank Masbate, 2-1.
Zamboanga-Dipolog and Masbate were scoreless in the first half, but the aggressive plays of the Northern Mindanao team in the second half paid off with Allen Acopiado connecting in the 60th minute and, seven minutes later, Elgen Antipolo found his mark.
