Suzuki Cup opens today

Thursday, May 16, 2013
AFTER a long postponement, the Philippine Football Federation– Suzuki Under-23 National Cup will finally kick off today at the Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete City.
Instead of doing separate regional finals, the organizing committee decided to gather all the teams from different clusters in one venue as they vie for the title.
The qualifying round will start today and will end on May 26. Teams that qualified are Masbate, Laguna and Baguio- Benguet from Luzon, Negros Occidental, Iloilo and Cebu from Visayas and North Cotabato, Iligan-Lanao del Norte, Davao and Zamboanga del Norte- Dipolog from Mindanao.
These teams will be divided into two groups and the top two squads per bracket will face each other in a crossover semifinals on May 28.
Cebu will be represented by University of San Jose Recoletos, which arrived in Dumaguete yesterday. The team had the full support of the Cebu Football Association from uniforms, coaching staff allowances and getting in sponsors to sign for the team.
The tournament will also give national coaches a chance to scout players for the
upcoming Southeast Asian Games.
Meanwhile, defending champion NOFA-Ceres is looking to defend its title and is banking on national team standout Gerardo Valmayor III and Joshua Beloya.
