Suzuki Cup U23: Medvil-Davao wins finals seat

Tuesday, May 28, 2013
FRANCIS Jay Abalunan hit the game-winning goal in the 96th minute on extension as Medvil Football Club of Davao City beat North Cotabato Football Association (Nocofa), 1-0, yesterday to secure a spot in the finals of the Philippine Football Federation-Suzuki Cup Under-23 National Cup at the Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete City.
Medvil-Davao head coach Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon said Nocofa put up a very tight defense, foiling their many attempts at the goal.
Carreon said he expects an even more intense game in the finals set at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. They will play either defending champion Ceres-Negros Occidental Football Association (Nofa) or Iloilo that were still playing in the other semi-finals match as of press time.
"We are ready to play any of the two teams. If it's going to be Ceres, we already have a plan for them but we cannot reveal it (laughs)," Carreon said in the vernacular in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao.
It can be recalled that Medvil-Davao bowed to Ceres-Nofa, 0-5, in their Group B eliminations.
The Dabawenyo coach also said, "We can avenge our loss to Ceres-Nofa if the players execute our game plan inside the field just like what they did against North Cotabato."
He cited the players for sticking with the plan when they played North Cotabato, thus, ensuring their needed victory.
Medvil-Davao, managed by Rafael "Pops" Vilela and Erwin Protacio, took a semis seat after finishing second in the group elims with two wins over Masbate (1-0) and Zamboanga del Norte-Dipolog, 3-0, and one loss.
Carreon thanked Penong's Barbecue and Grill, Coco's South Bistro, Cong. Isidro Ungab and Medvil Farms Inc. for supporting their stint in the bootfest that will serve as a venue to select Southeast Asian (SEA) Games-bound players.
The team is also bannered by team captain Jomar Acedo, Ed Merill Walohan, Yoshiharu Koizumi, Jerard Birneza, Michael Nehemiah T. Simms, brothers Derrico Gabriel and David Angelo Diamante, Frances Jay S. Abrasaldo, Imardino B. Polo, Khadaffy Biruar, Renz Rhey T. Napuran, Amani Manuel S. Aguinaldo, Danilo Lascuna Jr., Michael Pantojan and Jestoni R. Felipe.
