Army draws first blood against Union in playoffs

 Karl Decena, InterAKTV

Philippine Army took a step closer to keeping its Division One spot after notching a 5-3 comeback victory over Union Internacional Manila in the first leg of their United Football League playoff series Sunday at the Emperador Stadium in McKinley Hill in Taguig.
After trailing by two goals at the 19th minute, Army clawed back courtesy of Boogie Margarse and Luisito Brillantes, who scored at the 40th and the 49th minute, respectively, to tie the match in the second half.
Army then scored three straight goals to take a commanding 5-2 lead at the 76th minute which Union couldn’t recover from.
Brillantes scored at the 67th minute for the brace, while Romany Vestal and Jeoffrey Lobaton chipped in one goal apiece at the 56th and the 76th minutes to help the military squad with the victory.
Ivan Meilan, Ajah Stanley and Ebenezer Owusu accounted for the three goals of Union.
Army, which finished ninth in Division One, only needs to avoid a three-goal loss in the second leg against Union, the runner-up of Division Two, to keep its spot in the first division.
The second leg of the playoff will be played on July 14.
