Division 2 champ Socceroo keen to show it belongs in UFL top flight

SOCCEROO looks to start making its mark in Division 1 when it squares off with Philippine Army on Thursday in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.
Promoted to the top flight after ruling Division 2 last year, the Korean-laden squad got a reality check on what the top tier is all about after suffering a 0-2 loss at the hands of Pachanga-Diliman last Saturday.
That defeat snapped a 16-game winning streak put up last season where they went undefeated in their title run.
“It’s intense, more brusko,” Socceroo owner Nicholas Reyes admitted of the level of competition in Division 1. “Pero kaya naman. I think we’ll give them a run for their money.”
With the opening game out of the way, Socceroo hopes to barge into the win column in its 5:15 p.m. matchup against a military club that’s also trying to justify its place in the top flight.
The Troopers are hoping for a better season after barely surviving relegation last year when they had to defeat Union Internacionale Manila in a playoff.
Army, though, will have a boost in homegrown Azkals goalkeeper Ed Sacapaño, who returns to hold the fort after going on loan for Global last year.
In the nightcap, Green Archers United aims for its first win when it takes on Pasargad at 7:30 p.m.
The Archers, bannered by Azkals skipper Chieffy Caligdong, settled for a 2-2 draw against defending champion Stallion last weekend.
