KAYA FC tries to focus on things within its control as it collides with Pachanga-PLDT Home Fibr on Saturday in the United Football League at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.
Considered a tournament’s darkhorse, the third-running side is slowly slipping away from the title race following two disappointing results that allowed leaders Loyola Meralco and Global FC to start pulling away from the rest of the field.
Still, Kaya would rather concentrate on working on its flaws as it hopes to get back on the winning track in the 8:30 p.m. affair.
“In terms of trying to make up points with teams that are above us, I think if we start thinking like that and not thinking about individual matches, then we’re in big trouble,” Kaya coach David Perkovic said.
“We have to make sure that we look after our performances, which will then affect the results, which will affect points on the table,” the Australian mentor added.
After settling for a scoreless draw against defending champion Stallion and losing to Green Archers United, 2-3, last Tuesday, Kaya moved nine points behind the Sparks, and eight behind Global, although the title contender has played one game less than the two league-leaders.
Kaya hopes to duplicate its 2-1 victory over Pachanga in the first round, but it won’t be a walk in the park as it faces a sixth-running squad that has yet to live up to its full potential after reaching the UFL Cup finale last year.
Kaya counts on its six national team standouts in the fold in OJ Porteria, Anton del Rosario, Chris Greatwich, Andrew Liauw, Nick O’Donnell, and Kenshiro Daniels, while Pachanga, coming off a two-week layoff, banks on Azkal Nate Burkey as well as Reza Amirkhizan and Ariel Zerrudo.
The Archers, running seventh in the nine-team standings, hope to build on their victory against Kaya as they face cellar-dwelling Pasargad earlier at 6:15 p.m.
