Melliza drops four on Ilocos as Laguna scores huge blowout

By Ivan Saldajeno

BIÑAN--Stallion Laguna returned to PFL play with a bang, blanking Ilocos United, 5-0, at the Biñan Football Stadium on Sunday night.

Jhan-Jhan Melliza's double brace set the pace for Laguna as the club bolstered its bid to make the Final Four as the regular season nears the homestretch.

Melliza blitzed past the Ilocos defense and found himself with only Baba Sampana to beat, which he did for the 14th minute goal.

Emotions quickly flared following the goal as Ilocos coach Gillian was sent off for continuous complaining, insisting that Melliza was offside.

Melliza made sure his second goal will not be questioned as he received a through ball and once again pierced through the backline and slotted the ball past Sampana for the 2-0 count seven minutes into the restart.

Fitch Arboleda added one in the 55th minute as he quickly converted a goal from close range.

Melliza completed the hat trick in the 87th minute, once again rushing through the defense and blasted the goal from the right side.

Melliza then put the exclamation point with 35 seconds left with his fourth goal.

Laguna is now a point behind Marikina, which will face Makati later Sunday in Manila, for fifth place and within two of Negros for fourth place with nine games left in its schedule.

Ilocos, on the other hand, remains in the hunt for that elusive win as the club lost for the 14th time with only four draws.
